How to choose a harrow
The type of harrow is determined by the job you need to do. For breaking up clods after ploughing and preparing a seedbed, you need a disc harrow. For lighter levelling and aerating of a field, meadow or riding arena, a field harrow is enough. Meadows and pastures call for a meadow harrow — it rakes out moss and thatch so the sward regrows better.

What to watch out for
- A disc harrow needs traction. For disc harrows, choose a tractor with sufficient weight and 4WD.
- The 200 cm field harrow is light. At 100 kg and with a wide working width, even a smaller tractor can pull it, but it is not enough for hardened clods — that calls for discs.
- A meadow harrow does not replace a flail mulcher. It does not shorten the growth, it only rakes through it. Mow or mulch old grass and saplings first.
Frequently asked questions
When should I use a meadow harrow?
Typically in spring, once the meadow or pasture has dried out. The harrow rakes out moss, thatch and the remains of last year's grass, and the sward regenerates better.
Is a field harrow suitable for a riding arena?
For occasional levelling and aerating, yes. For regular arena maintenance, arena graders are the right tool.
Can a disc harrow replace ploughing?
On lighter, cultivated soils, a disc harrow can replace ploughing as shallow cultivation. On grassland, you first need a plough.
